Why is societal participation important?
The length of time the internationally recruited nurses stay in Germany depends not only on their work situation, but also on their integration in social togetherness. It is about understanding and living with our constitution, legal order and legal social and social order. It is about being able to follow and shape the social discourse in Germany, to participate in everyday public life and to have the secure feeling of being welcome and belonging here. It is about friendships, good neighbourliness and connections in the community and region. Internationally recruiting companies can support their newly acquired employees in this.
Promote social participation
The employer can promote the socio-political participation of internationally recruited nurses:
- by the content taught in the compensation measure on the legal and social system in the Federal Republic of Germany,
- by the inclusion of content in the induction training process or further training plan for all nurses in the team,
- by participating in corresponding programmes such as the welcome mentoring programme of the Otto Benecke Stiftung e.V (OBS) and
- through individual support, in which the employer independently maintains networks with civil society organisations and faith communities, and mediates contact to them for the employee.
Find out about the support options of the integration officers at the federal, state and municipal level. A good place to start is the website of the commissioner of the Federal Republic for migration, refugees and integration.
Network with (self-)organised groups for migrants, such as associations of internationally recruited nurses in Germany, as partners in the process of intercultural opening and diversity management.
In this way, you demonstrate to the internationally recruited nurses that their special situation and needs are perceived by the company on equal terms.
There are an increasing number of providers of seminars and programmes that address issues of socio-political participation in the social context of the workplace. It is worth keeping an attentive eye on the development of offers.
Hallo Danke Ja – The Podcast
The podcast ‘Hallo Danke Ja’ offers a platform for nursing professionals from abroad who report on their respective personal stories of starting over in Germany.
Usually, these are the very first words that give the starting signal for a new beginning in Germany.
As a German teacher for the Cologne Cellitinnen Hospital Heilig Geist-Krankenhaus and St. Marien Hospital, Anna Di Biase gets to know nurses from all over the world and hears a lot about the experiences of her students. It doesn’t matter whether the nurses come to Germany from Eastern Europe, India, Tunisia or Iran – they all have one thing in common: learning a new language to work in a foreign country means so much more than just learning vocabulary and grammar by heart.
What does it really take to arrive? What does home mean? What is culture, really?
The podcast ‘Hallo Danke Ja’ is on the trail of the answers to these questions.
The guests of ‘Hallo Danke Ja’ talk about these topics in German and their stories are full of strength and motivation.
In the section ‘Hallo Danke Ja – Hintergrund’ (‘Hallo Danke Ja – Background’) there are also interviews with experts on the topics of language and migration.
In addition, Kristina Kojic from Bosnia is the moderator in the category ‘What does…’ and talks to staff from the various wards in the hospital. The focus is on the concrete differences in working methods in the home country and in Germany.
It’s worth listening in!
